Summer Subway Art

I know that the official start of Summer is still three weeks away, but as with all holidays why not get started decorating early?

I made this Summer Subway Art printable to share! It is sized 8 x 10. I love the bigger ones I see on so many blogs, but truth be told I have a hard time going and getting then printed. Dragging a 3 year old to Costco along with my third trimester big ol' belly isn't easy.

You can print this at home on card stock or send to your local pharmacy for printing. I had mine printed at Walgreens and the yellow background did come out a bit more mustard colored, just to let you know!

Get the printable here!

Enjoy! If you use it I would love to see pictures!

Story time Sunday

I love Books. As a kid I would devour Nancy Drew and The Baby Sitter's Club and Pee Wee Scouts. As a mom, I try to sneak in a few pages of a book whenever I can. My little one tends to like the same books over and over and then he switches to a new favorite over and over!

Please share your favorites in the comments!

Here is what is on our bookshelf lately:

For the Little:

Llama Llama Misses Mama(A great book for a soon to be Preschooler!) Its also on sale at Kohls for $5.00!

Leonardo The Terrible Monster

Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree:

For Mom:

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet (an easy read to pick up and put down)

Sisters of the Quilt Series

I picked up Book 3 first by accident at the Library, but I devoured it! My husband was like wow I haven't seen you that into a book in a long time!

Scrap Wood to Stylish Shelves

Hubby had lots of scrap wood and I have seen the Gallery Shelves all around Blog land. I have been trying to be super good about not buying new things for crafting as I really do have plenty around the house and who am I kidding, many bins stashed in the garage!

Step 1: Find Wood:

Step 2: Cut Wood. I got the design plans from  Ana White, who has amazing projects.

So, these shelves didn’t cost me anything as the wood was purchased for other things like my son’s loft bed. I will post that as soon as I can get his room clean long enough for a picture!

Step 3: Install Brackets if using particle board to connect the pieces of your shelf. But if you are using MDF or real wood, then a bracket is not necessary.

Step 4: Prime your shelves. We used Zinsser primer in white.

Step 5: Paint: The shelves are painted Valspar's Bird’s Egg Blue, which is the same color I used for my desk in this post.

Step 6: Decorate and Rearrange and Rearrange again!

The frames are from my favorite store Ikea. We do not have one in Vegas so I drag my family every time I visit California or Utah.

The Printables are from One Pretty Thing and eventually I plan to print this to add to the shelves from the lovely Eighteen 25 ladies!

Chicken and Stuffing, Frozen Veggies

Homemade Pizza(maybe BBQ Chicken pizza) and Veggies

Dessert of the Week: Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies

Doing Disneyland on a Budget!

Who doesn't love the Happiest Place on Earth! I recently watched a documentary on television about the life of  Walt Disney and it just made me admire the place that much more. I am known as a savvy coupon queen in my circle of friends so I figured I would pass along my tips!

Hotel:
You can get a hotel for $59.00 a night. No joke! We have had a wonderful experience at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel on Harbor Blvd. The rooms are very clean and they have an in room fridge! You can see the fireworks from Disneyland at night. Also, they have a kids water play area called Castaway Cove that is so much fun complete with a water slide and a huge bucket that dumps torrential water every 5 minutes or so! My son never wanted to leave!

How did I get the room for $59.00? You have to have an Entertainment Book(for any area, not Anaheim specifically) and you have to go on set dates they advertise here! These are not peak dates like Spring Break, but if you have young children like me, the off peak dates are fine and mean less crowds. Which brings me to my next point!

Tickets:
There is not a ton you can do to get tickets to Disneyland significantly cheaper, however children under three get in free to Disney Theme Parks and Water Parks!. We went as close to my son turning three as possible! Also, you can check the Disney fan board Mousesavers for additional ticket discount tips.

Food!
There are some things that you just have to have at Disney Such as a Mickey Bar! But Disney allows food to be taken in to the park. My little family still has a stroller so we often put some frozen water bottles in the bottom and pack some sandwich bags of non-perishable/melt-ables such as Goldfish crackers and Teddy Grahams or treats like Gummi Worms and Skittles to tide us over while in the queues.
However, there are deals that can be found on food around the park. One idea is to sign up for Mimi's Cafe E-Club. They send out coupons like by one breakfast, get one free quite often. It is located right across the street from Disneyland and has wonderful food. Though most coupons are dine in, we have occasionally ordered food To-Go and eaten it in our hotel room when we are just to worn out from the park for a full sit down meal.

Also, check your hotel for coupons and discounts. I checked the little kiosk and found a 10% discount coupon for the McDonald's located on Harbor Blvd., so those came in handy when we needed a quick meal.

Also, if you will be staying more than a few days, our in room fridge came in handy, We used my husband's handy phone and found a Target down the street from Disneyland and stocked up on bottled water for me and milk for the little. Much better than the $2.50 or so they want for a bottle of water at Disneyland!

Souvenirs
I have seen lots of tricks for this. As a young family, my kids don't quit get it yet. Normally we allow $20.00 for a souvenir, but I also employ some other strategies.

I stalk the dollar store for Disney related things as well as those glow in the dark necklaces and bracelets so I can bring them out when my son sees others wearing them.I also visit this message board where there are some great designs with Disney Characters and I have made them in to shirts, room signs, etc. Of course, for me the pictures of my little ones with the characters are the best souvenir!

I hope these tips help you have a wonderful Disneyland trip on a shoestring budget!

National Chocolate Chip Day Recipe

It is National Chocolate Chip Day this Sunday! Who knew these lovely little morsels had their own day to celebrate!  I love chocolate chips and so does my 3 year old, I sometimes catch him sneaking some out of the fridge!

In honor of the celebration I decided to make the yummiest chocolate chip cookies. I found the recipe on the unegaminedanslacuisine blog and I changed it slightly as I am not a fan of peppermint, but crème de menthe .

My husband prefers these without any extract and they do not last long around here so you may want to double the recipe.

Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. of salt
1/4 tsp. of baking soda
1/2 cup of butter at room temperature (I usually microwave mine for 10 sec. as I never remember to take it out early!)
1/2 cup of tightly packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup of granulated sugar
1 egg (beaten)
1/4 tsp. of mint extract (optional)
1 cup of dark or semi sweet chocolate chips
Method:
In a medium bowl, gently stir together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
In a larger bowl (I use my Kitchen Aid mixer), beat the butter and sugars together on medium speed until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes). On low speed, slowly add the beaten egg and crème de menthe extract. Beat to combine, scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Add the flour mixture and beat just until there are no more streaks of flour. Add in the chocolate chips.
Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes or so.
Preheat the oven to 375F.. Scoop out well rounded tablespoonfuls of the dough and roll them into balls.
Bake for 8-9 minutes for soft cookies. If you prefer crispier cookies increase the baking time by 1-2 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet before removing.
This is a small recipe; it only makes about 18 cookies. Store in an airtight container or in a food storage bag to maximize freshness.

30 Minute Gift Idea & Printable

I felt like crafting today but I didn't know what to make. It is windy outside so painting was out of the question and being 26 weeks pregnant makes smelly glue type crafts out of the question too..I finally settled on something I can add to my gift closet and I needed it to be quick because I decided I wanted to be crafty at 4pm...

Hence the journal jar...

I have been reading Simple Abundance again as well as Something More: Excavating your Authentic Self both by Sarah Ban Breathnach which talks a lot about self discovery and gratitude.

I used my friend Google and found a bunch of great prompts on the Abundance Blog as well as on a Super Teacher blog to put together a list. Some are fun, some are serious "What the heck are you doing with your life?" type prompts.

You can download my list of prompts here. I spaced them out and printed them on some fun patterned scrapbook paper I had around the house.

This would be a fun quick gift with a pretty notebook or a fun pack of pens!

I thought this could also be a fun personal progress activity especially if you take the items from the Personal Progress book as the activities and print them on the value colors. Then the YW could draw one item a week or month to work on.
